"A leader in play development"
- Los Angeles Times“L.A. intimate theater at its most cutting-edge and compelling”
- Stage Scene LA
The award-winning, nationally recognized Skylight Theatre Company is Los Angeles’ premiere destination for new plays with new perspectives. We are dedicated to nurturing and presenting new work by veteran and emerging writers alike.
Skylight tells stories that speak to the current moment and build connection and compassion. We create authentic worlds on our stage that reveal the life experiences of diverse people and demonstrate our shared humanity.
Skylight offers high caliber developmental programming designed to nurture new playwrights and their work at every stage from inception to production. Our company is also an incubator for emerging theater companies for which we provide guidance and co-producing opportunities.
Serving a diverse and inclusive community of artists, our play development programming honors each artist’s authentic voice, generating work that is original, revelatory, transporting.
The cornerstone of new play development at Skylight is our SkyLab playwrights-in-residence program, presented free of charge to the artists. Our twelve resident playwrights meet monthly for 18-months under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Tony Award Nominee Lee Blessing. All three of the plays chosen for Skylight’s 2020 Season emerged from SkyLab.
In addition, we nurture new plays and playwrights through readings, workshops, and ongoing dramaturgical support. Our open play submissions process reflects the openness of our community.
“A beautifully written, brilliantly directed, gorgeously produced, and wonderfully acted triumph”
