FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome! No Place Like Gandersheim hits close to home at Skylight. When we're doing our best work, we're introducing you to artists from underrepresented backgrounds who have an undeniable voice. In the American Theater, women playwrights and women directors fall into one of many underrepresented categories. Roz, Beth's main character in Gandersheim, is a playwright who loves and believes in what she does so passionately that she hurls herself through time in search of when her writing will be accepted. She's a kindred spirit with anyone who believes in our mission to bring you new plays and plays new to Los Angeles. We believe in giving the playwrights who walk through our doors the opportunity to hone their craft and go on to have full careers.
If you take a moment to notice the number of women in the audience today, on the front of house team, and on the production staff. Is it more than half? How often are their stories taking centerstage in the productions you've seen this year or the television shows you watch? How many of those stories are also written by women, directed by women? Since you're sitting in our house to watch Gandersheim you were probably already aware of the disparity between the world we live in and worlds represented in media and on stage. I hope that today's performance has given you occasion to think about it, talk about it, and perhaps do something about it.
- Armando Huipe -
“NO PLACE LIKE GANDERSHEIM" is performed without intermission.
